Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM was released by Canon since September 2001. It is a very popular lens for sports, portrait and for compressed landscape photography.

Being an “L” grade professional range lens, the construction and build quality of this lens is excellent. The lens does not extend during focusing or zooming and front of the lens also does not rotate during zooming unlike Canon’s consumer zoom like the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. Because of the ‘professional” grade construction, this lens is rather heavy though at 1470g.

A lens hood is inclusive unlike Canon’s consumer lenses. A tripod collar is also included. I wished Canon would consider design of tripod collar like those make by Nikon. The tripod collar on this lens can only be attached or remove with the lens complelety removed from the camera. With the Nikon design, although the collar inside cannot be attached or removed from the lens with the camera attached, the ‘feet” of the tripod collar can be removed separated, making handholding a lot easier or more comfortable with having to take the tripod collar off completely.

This lens has Canon’s 2nd generation IS (image stabilizer), which is effective for a gain up to 3-stops. I can confirm that IS in this lens does work as claimed is is very effective. The IS has 2 modes, one for panning and the other for static subjects.

The is lens uses a ring-USM motor for focusing. The focusing speed is lightning fast and the accuracy is very good.

The optical quality of this lens is first rate. It is sharp even at maximum aperture and the quality of the bokeh is superb. This is my favorite lens for concert photography. It is also a great lens for sports and action photography and doing compressed landscape. other being a rather heavy lens, this is a very versatile zoom indeed with excellent optical quality.

The following are some sample shots I have made with this lens.

  1. great review… and great pics…

my brother has the 70-200 4L is usm version and i was able to try it out. just wondering if the 2.8L is usm version is a whole lot better…

the concert pics look great, but i was wondering how the 2.8L is usm would perform under fast conditions

i plan to take sport shots indoors in low light conditions, where flash photography isn’t allowed. i.e. badminton tounaments, table tennis tournaments, etc.

i was wondering if you could take some shots under the above conditions and post some pictures… i would appreciate it very very much… šŸ˜€

btw. do you have any review for the 70200mm F4L USM ?
