Lake Notoro

Lake Notoro 能取湖 is a lagoon separated from the Sea of Okhotsk by a sandbar located at Abashiri in Hokkaido. It is one of the only places in Japan with glasswort. The glasswort is green in color throughout most time of the year, but from September to early October the colonies of glasswort growing along the shore change color, bathing the coast in a carpet of crimson. I visited this place during my tour of Hokkaido in September 2009. I reached there late in the afternoon with a rather overcast sky. Originally, I thought the photos would not be too appealing with such an overcast sky, but it turned out much better than expected.

All shots were taken with Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 16-35mm f2.8L II USM.
