Fujinon XF55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS First Day

I got a call from Mr Yip of Echo Photo & Audio couple of days ago that the new Fujinon XF55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS just arrived, so I went to the shop and picked it up yesterday.

Nothing definitive to say yet other than the initial impression is quite good. Lens construction is very good and solid and up to the same standard as other XF lenses. It is the biggest XF lens so far, but still a reasonable size lens and small compared to typical DSLR telephoto zoom.

With a zoom range of 55-200mm, it has the field of view (FOV) equivalent to a 82.5-300mm zoom lens on a full frame camera. In real life usage on a X-Pro1 or XE-1, it will be roughly equivalent to say a Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM on a full frame camera like a Canon 6D or 5D Mark III. Of course the size of both the Fuji camera and lens would be much smaller than the Canon combo.

I have not updated the camera firmware yet when I tried out the lens yesterday, but autofocus speed seemed to be quite satisfactory, but of course cannot be compared to a DSLR like the 5D Mark III.

The optical image stabilizer however was very good. I could handhold down to very slow shutter speed at 200mm and still got some reasonably sharp images.

The following are some images taken yesterday with brief description. They are all JPEG images directly out from X-Pro1 without any post-processing.

The lens came in a typical black box as in all X series cameras in lenses.

A view of the real thing.

This shot was taken at 200mm ISO6400 f4.8 and 1/40sec. Resolution seemed very good at 200mm even at ISO 6400.

200mm ISO 250 f4.8 1/125sec

200mm ISO 800 f4.8 1/125sec

200mm ISO 5000 f4.8 1/125s

77.9mm ISO6400 f3.8 1/50sec. This was a pretty extreme test. I was sitting in a car traveling at about 100km/h, shooting at another car traveling at a speed slightly slower than us on the next lane.

55mm ISO 3200 f3.5 1/40sec. Traveling at about 80km/h, shooting at the car in front of us.

200mm ISO 6400 f4.8 1/120sec. Similar shot as above, but at 200mm.

  2. Just coming back from Bangkok where I was able to test that 55-200 in shop, impressed by enough good AF, sharp pictures, and relatively correct weight. If you go in Thailand soon, you can find it at MBK 5th floor (BTS National Stadium station) or AV Camera (BTS Saphan Taksin station), price 23990 THB equal 567€ (after VAT refund 7%). Owner D800 + lenses, top quality but so heavy for travel…my XPRO1 is a pleasure to use every time, sure I will buy soon that lens. I apologize for mistakes as a French people, thank’s for sharing your feeling about that.
